Massive earthquake in Haiti

Hundreds, possibly thousands, of people are feared dead after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti last night. According to reports, it was the most powerful earthquake to hit Haiti in 200 years.

Update: 29 Concern local staff are unaccounted for.

Destruction

The earthquake caused massive damage across the country. The presidential palace and the UN mission in the capital Port-au-Prince are among the buildings destroyed, reports Guardian.co.uk.

Emergency response

Concern’s staff in Haiti are going to be joined by our emergency experts who are travelling to the area. We’re conducting an assessment of the damage. Our main response will focus on providing medicine, water, food and shelter.
