The Miniature Earth

Trying to comprehend some of the statistics about issues like poverty and hunger can be difficult at times.

The numbers discussed are often huge, and I sometimes think that the reality of the situation is lost within the anonymity of the statistics. Clearly, statistics are very important, and so too is presenting them in a digestible way.

A very good example of this is the Miniature Earth project. As a concept, it distils the world’s population down into a village of 100 people. Using this village model, an array of statistics on religion, poverty, hunger and more are presented through video. Its aim is to help us to better understand the reality behind the numbers. It works.

According to the Miniature Earth site, the statistics used are based on reports on the world’s population from the UN, Population Reference Bureau and other sources.
