Debates team member coming to a school near you

Like students and teachers all around the country, I can’t believe its September already.

The summer is fast becoming a damp and distant memory. But, luckily we have a whole new year of debating to look forward to… When the Debates were reviewed in 2006, one recommendation was that schools would appreciate more contact with the Debates Unit. With over 150 schools nationwide taking part in the Debates each year, it has been difficult to visit all the schools involved – which is where I come in.

Visiting schools

As the debates development officer, I will be on the road visiting schools, bringing along our new funky-looking debates resources to help you prepare for the debating season. So whether you are new to the debates and would like some guidance, or are a debating veteran but would like to refresh your skills, please get in touch to arrange a visit.

Getting the whole school involved

This year we will be looking at ways your whole school can be involved in the debates, so if you have any examples of this, please let us know by adding a comment below. From the debates team practising in front of the first years, to the home economics class providing the tea and buns on the night of the debate – we want to hear how you have involved the whole school in Concern Debates.

I will also be on the lookout for adjudicators. These are very important people who give up their time to adjudicate the debates. No experience is necessary and Concern will provide training and support. In fact, the only thing we ask our adjudicators to bring is an open mind. If you are interested, or know someone who would be interested, please get in touch at the details below.

I’ll be hitting the Midlands next week visiting schools in Offaly, Westmeath and Laois. It’s not too late if you would like me to call into your school. Just call or text 087 329 9865 or send an email to debatesconcern.net. Look forward to seeing you soon.
