Know Your World
The debates national final is taking place in a couple of weeks. In the meantime, we thought we’d tell you how the Concern Know Your World Final 2008 went.
It took place on 24 Thursday April with the top 21 teams in the country doing battle for spot prizes, chocolate and most importantly the glory of being crowned Know Your World champions!
It’s official – Cork knows most!
There were five qualifying heats throughout the country in Athlone, Thurles, Dublin, Donegal and Cork with about 70 teams taking part altogether. The winners of each heat plus the next fifteen top-scoring teams made it through to the Grand Final in Dublin. It seems that Cork has the highest proportion of globally aware students with seven of the 21 teams making it to the final coming from the “real” capital!
On the day
St Mark’s Community School, Tallaght, were the hot favourites to win, having scored a whopping 93 points in the qualifying round. They started strongly and were in the lead for the first four rounds but obviously sport and culture wasn’t St Mark’s strong point as the lead transferred to St Mary’s Galway A team for the next three rounds. Full marks in the picture round for St Benildus College, Stillorgan, and St Mark’s put those two teams neck and neck after round eight. St Mark’s edged back into the lead after round nine but were pipped at the post by St Benildus who scored 10 out of 11 in the final sound and music round ensuring that they were victorious on the day. Congratulations to St Benildus and to all the teams who took part in the final. Hope to see you again next year.
