Tribute to Garret FitzGerald

On behalf of Concern Worldwide, I would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends of former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Garret FitzGerald who died this morning. Garret was a true statesman, leader and gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Development aid

In 1974, as Minister for Foreign Affairs, Garret was responsible for introducing Ireland's development aid programme. During his presidency of the then European Economic Community (EEC), he signed the Lomé convention – an aid and trade agreement between the EEC and 46 African, Caribbean and Pacific states.

Social justice

Throughout his political career, Garret remained committed to social justice. In 2010, he supported the Act Now 2015, as shown in the picture above.

He will be sadly missed in Ireland and in many other lands.
