Concern Worldwide CEO welcomes increase in overseas development aid budget and Minister’s future commitments

10 October 2017

Concern Worldwide CEO, Dominic MacSorley, has welcomed the €13 million increase in the overseas development aid budget announced today by the Government.

Spotlighting Ireland’s responsibility to helping those in need and echoing the Taoiseach’s vision for Ireland as a country at the centre of the world, Mr MacSorley said:

“With 20 million facing food insecurity across East Africa, it is critical that the funds are available for organisations such as Concern to invest in life-saving interventions such as providing food, shelter, water and sanitation so that no-one gets left behind.

“Ireland has a long-standing reputation globally as a leader in international development and humanitarian response. In these times of looming famine, such leadership is critically important. The Minister’s remarks signal the Government’s intention to retain and strengthen Ireland’s reputation by accelerating progress towards the international 0.7% aid target.

Concern also welcomed the Government’s support of the broader charity sector with the establishment of the charities’ VAT relief scheme.
