1000 DAYS launch

Concern Worldwide today launched a major new campaign to raise awareness and drive political momentum for priority investment in nutrition for babies and mothers in the developing world during the 1,000 days between a woman’s pregnancy and her child’s second birthday.

The following is an excerpt from the press release, which can be downloaded below.

The campaign, entitled ‘1000 DAYS of baby nutrition’, was launched by An Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore TD at the National Library. It involves a three year commitment by Concern and has been endorsed by President Michael D. Higgins and the United Nations Director General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, amongst others.

At the launch, Concern CEO Tom Arnold called on the Irish government and Irish people to be “hunger heroes”. He said that the fight against hunger, in particular child hunger, is at a critical crossroads because there had never before been so much knowledge and evidence available to make malnutrition history. Simple and proven solutions could save one million lives a year, he said.

Mr Arnold stressed that Ireland is recognised as a leader in tackling hunger in the world’s poorest countries, but it could do more to push for a stronger global and European commitment to ending the scourge of undernutrition. He called on the Government to make hunger and undernutrition a priority during Ireland’s Presidency of the EU in the first six months of next year. Securing nutrition for the world’s poorest mothers and their children could be an Irish “badge of honour” in this time of recession, he said.

“If there was just one thing we could do to make the greatest impact on the lives and futures of children and their mothers, even in this time of recession, securing nutrition in the 1,000 days window would be it,” Mr Arnold said. “If we want to tackle the devastating problem of global hunger and its complex economic and social repercussions, we must hold ourselves accountable for delivering solutions to undernutrition in children and mothers, and making sure those solutions are accessible to those who need them most.”
