Concern calls for cancellation of Haiti debt

Concern calls for cancellation of Haiti debt

29 January 2010

Concern appeals to the Irish government to make its voice heard in support of cancelling Haiti’s now unsustainable debt burden.

In its presentation to the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee, Concern called on the Irish Government to vote at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the cancellation of all debt for Haiti.

Concern also advised that any disaster relief assistance to Haiti should be given in the form of grants and not loans, in order to reduce financial burden on the country. This was echoed in a strong statement by the Foreign Affairs Committee following the meeting.
