Concern reaction to Government budget

Dominic MacSorley, CEO of Concern Worldwide, has welcomed the announcement of an increase in the overseas aid budget.

Speaking today Dominic MacSorley, CEO of Concern Worldwide said:

Concern welcomes the Minister’s announcement today of an increase in the overseas aid budget, reversing the downward trend of recent years. This increase to 0.36% of GNP is an encouraging step in the right direction towards meeting the internationally agreed target of 0.7%. The additional funding is desperately needed to tackle the massive unmet humanitarian needs of populations caught up in conflict, struggling to survive.

Ireland is globally renowned for its leadership on tackling poverty and hunger and in the week that Concern published the Global Hunger Index, showing that 52 countries around the world are suffering from serious or alarming levels of hunger, it is critical that we continue to increase resources to support and expand this vital work in the coming years.
