Can you eat and drink for less than €2 a day for five days?
The 'Survive on €2 a Day for 5 Days' challenge ask participants to eat and drink on less than €2 a day for five days, in honour of those who live below the extreme poverty line.
By participating, you will help millions of children and families who are facing extreme hunger across Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
According to the United Nations, nearly half of the world’s population currently lives in poverty, with income less than €2 per day. This challenge isn't about trying to mimic this - we couldn’t do that. But by deciding to eat and drink on just €2 a day for 5 days, you'll be shedding light on the lives of those who live below the poverty line.
In light of the ongoing global challenges, there has never been a more crucial moment to take action.
Presently, over 23.5 million people in the Horn of Africa are grappling with hunger, among them 5.4 million individuals in Kenya and 6.6 million in Somalia. Erratic climate conditions are contributing to droughts that have left millions without food or an ability to earn a living from the land.
In some parts of East Africa, heavy rains have returned - but this presents a different problem as the ground has been parched from the drought and cannot absorb the water, leaving 900,000 people impacted by the floods.
The effects of the hunger crisis are dire. In Somalia, for example, nearly 44% of children under five years old are malnourished and in need of urgent help.
By participating in this challenge, you will help raise funds that can bring about life-saving differences, providing emergency food and essential support to those who urgently require humanitarian aid in the region.
How to take part
Everyone who signs up will aim to eat and drink on just €2 a day for 5 days between 2nd-6th October 2023.
Each participant will be sent a Concern Worldwide tote bag and budget tracker. We ask those taking part to set up a Facebook or JustGiving fundraising page so they can ask their friends and family to sponsor their challenge.
Everyone taking part can join the Survive on €2 a Day for 5 Days Challenge Facebook Group to share photos of their daily meals with the challenge community.
This page will help you with any questions you may have about this exciting challenge and how you can get involved and raise vital funds for those affected by the climate crisis in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.
