Our work in South Sudan
Our team in South Sudan is responding to the worst food crisis the country has ever experienced. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), some 1.7 million people are on the brink of famine. Our emergency response is delivered in addition to long-term development work focusing on health, agriculture and livelihoods.
Deepening food crisis
South Sudan is in the grip of a food crisis that threatens millions of lives. The combination of persistent conflict and economic instability has left millions of people without sufficient food supplies and it is estimated that 6 million people are severely food insecure.
Our team is on the ground providing emergency nutrition, food distributions and water support in critically affected areas. In Northern Bahr el Ghazal, we have up scaled our nutrition response from 42 to 49 nutrition sites and we have established three static nutrition sites outside Bentiu PoC in Unity State.
Our emergency programmes in South Sudan, funded by European Union Humanitarian Aid, Irish Aid, the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), the Canadian Government (GAC) and the UN primarily focus on nutrition (preventative and curative), clean water supply and sanitation, as well as shelter and essential supplies for displaced families.
Our teams have been on the ground in Bentiu since January 2014, just weeks after the conflict first erupted. We are currently providing clean water and latrines for more than 63,000 people living in the Protection of Civilians (PoC) camp in Bentiu and we are providing treatment for malnutrition to almost 10,000 women and children in Bentiu and the surrounding areas. Our teams are also providing shelter for families in the Bentiu PoC. In 2016 we constructed 1,800 new shelters bringing the total constructed to 11,736, providing robust shelter for over 100,000 people.
Concern is also working in the capital, Juba. We are distributing food and vouchers to over 2,400 displaced families and treating malnourished children in the camps and in three primary health care units.
Northern Bahr el Ghazal
Northern Bahr el Ghazal has also been indirectly affected by the conflict and severe droughts, and we are scaling up our nutrition and health programming in response to rising levels of malnutrition in the state. In 2016 Concern provided 440,000 people with general food distributions to help prevent widespread malnutrition in the area. We are also continuing our long-term development work in Northern Bahr Ghazal, which has stayed relatively stable throughout the conflict. This includes improving access to treatment for malnutrition through the local health system as well as agriculture and livelihoods initiatives.
