Hospital art in Northern Ireland

The mural is dedicated to the outstanding work of health workers across the world, especially those who care for mothers and babies.

John’s Mayo

The piece is entitled “Mayo”, which means “My Mother” in Bemba (a Zambian language). It was painted by local artist John Johnston. John’s inspiration for the painting was the care of his wife at Craigavon Area Hospital and his son, who was born prematurely.

He was also inspired by his time spent working in Zambia.

Real issue

John also wanted to highlight the lack of medical services for women in the poor countries where Concern works.

Complex issues

Karen Gallagher, director of Concern in Northern Ireland, thanked everyone involved: “We are delighted to have had the opportunity to work with John Johnson and the Southern Trust [of which Craigavon Area Hospital is a part], to help communicate some of these very complex issues to the general public."
