Concern writing competition 2009

The winners of the Concern Cecil Woodham-Smith Creative Writing Competition 2009 have been announced. Below are links to the three winning essays.

The President of the USA is a busy man. As part of our writing competition, we asked people to write to him about some of the critical issues facing the world today.

The closing date for this competition was 22 March 2009.

The letters focused on one of these critical global issues:

They were to be in the style of a factual essay or a fictional story.

Hi Haleema, I'm glad you are excited to know who the winners of the writing competition are. We are hoping to announce them by the end of May. It has been a huge task so far! 100 readers have helped us whittle down the orginal 800 essays to the final 30 which have gone to the expert judging panel which includes journalist Deaglán de Bréadún, Professor Gary Murphy DCU, writer Hugo Hamilton and even Father Aengus Finucane, one of the founding members of Concern. They'll have a really tough task to choose the winners as the standard has been exceptionally high this year... watch this space!
