Republic of Sudan

Republic of Sudan

Why are we in the Republic of Sudan? After nearly four years of civil and political unrest, the situation in Sudan escalated in April 2023 into outright conflict between rival factions, worsening an already-existing humanitarian crisis. The fighting has displaced more than 5.25 million people – one in every 10 people across Sudan – both within the country and to neighboring countries. And nearly 25 million people, roughly half of Sudan’s population, are now vulnerable and need humanitarian assistance.

Mass displacement due to conflict

The inter-factional violence between the SAF and the RSF has fueled a humanitarian crisis of epic and tragic proportions. The fighting, which started in Khartoum, has spread  across Sudan with major episodes in all states where Concern works - namely West and South Kordofan, and West Darfur states. Specific ethnic groups have been targeted and systematically killed due to their origins. This has revived memories of past horrors in the region, and led more than 300,000 individuals into Chad to seek refuge as of August according to UN.

Some 4.2 million people are now newly displaced within Sudan and over 1 million people have sought refuge in neighbouring countries. A large number of refugees have crossed into Chad and South Sudan, where resources are already very limited.

I was really distressed before we were referred to Concern’s nutrition programme by their volunteers. I thought I might lose my only daughter. I am now very grateful to Concern for bringing my daughter to life.
