Most of us do not think twice about having a roof over our heads or a warm bed to sleep in when winter comes.

In Syria, millions of displaced families face a dangerous winter in tents, damaged homes and temporary shelters.

During winter storms, water seeps into tents, snow piles up between shelters, and families struggle to stay warm. 

Yet, despite the grim headlines, there’s a new chapter in Syria’s story. After a decade of conflict, families have new hope for peace and safety. 

But they need your support to help them survive the winter with greater safety, dignity and hope.

Like 11 million other Syrians, Samira* (42) was forced to flee her home when her village came under fire. She told us: "We tried not to go too far from our homes, hoping we would return soon — but ‘soon’ turned into years.” She lives in a tent she calls home alongside her husband and their eight children.   

Surviving the harsh winter season involves waking up in the middle of the night to check for leaks in the tent or ground. Missing a leak may mean that water seeps in and soaks everything they own - mattresses, blankets, and clothes. At the same time, roofs are often unstable. “Sometimes we spend the entire night awake, fearing that strong winds might tear the tent away or cause it to collapse on us.”
