Winter shouldn’t be a fight for survival. But for families in Syria, it is.

After more than a decade of conflict, many Syrian families are facing another freezing season in flimsy tents.

Most of us do not think twice about having a roof over our heads or a warm bed to sleep in when winter comes.

In Syria, millions of displaced families face a dangerous winter in tents, damaged homes and temporary shelters.

Many face a choice between food, warmth, or medication.

Yet, despite the grim headlines, there’s a new chapter in Syria’s story. After a decade of conflict, families have new hope for peace and safety.

But they need your support to help them weather the cold with greater safety, dignity and hope.

Samira* (42) was forced to flee her home when her village came under fire. She told us: "We tried not to go too far from our homes, hoping we would return soon — but ‘soon’ turned into years.” She lives in a tent alongside her husband and their eight children.

The family prepare for what the locals call the "40 Days of Winter" by covering their tent with plastic sheeting and building a barrier around it to stop it from flooding. Wood is expensive, so they burn nylon bags, cardboard, mats and whatever they can find. "A tent does not protect from cold or heat. Adults can somehow endure the cold, but children cannot."

Samira and her family received one-time cash assistance of 150 USD. Instead of in-kind distributions, cash support was intentionally chosen because it offers families dignity and flexibility, allowing them to decide for themselves what is most urgent for them in the harsh winter months.
