Tackling the High Food Price Challenge

Over the last six years, increasingly unpredictable rains have contributed to the region’s longest drought in more than 40 years, disrupting the lives and livelihoods of communities who depend on these seasonal patterns. Although conditions eased temporarily in 2023, the outlook remains uncertain. Drought is a major part of the story, but it does not explain the scale of the crisis on its own. Food insecurity across the Horn of Africa is also being intensified by conflict, rising global prices, disrupted supply chains, and declining humanitarian funding.

In Malawi, the FS4FS programme (2023–2027) targets 47,520 subsistence farming households, including female-headed households, households that include people with disabilities, and households headed by older people. The initiative aims to increase food and nutrition security among vulnerable households by supporting income generation along food value chains.

Between 2017 and 2026, Concern Worldwide partnered with the Trinity Impact Evaluation Unit at Trinity College Dublin to conduct robust and independent research into the impact of Concern’s Graduation programme in Malawi and the benefits of incorporating a gender transformative component into the programme.
