Decision to halt WHO funding will hurt the world’s poorest countries
Concern Worldwide has warned that US President Donald Trump's decision to halt his country’s funding for the World Health Organisation (WHO) will hurt low income countries which are likely to be the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The WHO plays a vital role in supporting some of the world’s poorest countries to respond to health crises such as COVID-19, as well as other major challenges such as Ebola and Measles,” Concern CEO Dominic MacSorley said. “The impact of the funding cuts in these countries as they face into the pandemic could be devastating.”
‘This virus is unprecedented in our lifetime and requires a united global response,” Mr MacSorley said. “We need to learn the lessons from Covid-19 but not in the middle of the fight. Now is not the time. Nor is it the time to cut funding to World Health Organization or any other humanitarian organization - the consequences for most vulnerable will be devastating. Now is the time for leadership, clarity of direction and urgent, united action’.
