Republic of Sudan

Republic of Sudan

Why are we in the Republic of Sudan? Three years of unceasing conflict have turned Sudan into the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Concern has been in Sudan for 40 years and is responding to the new needs driven by this conflict, including nutrition, health, water, and livelihood support.

33.7 million people in Sudan need humanitarian assistance in 2026

In April 2023, a fragile alliance between rival factions disintegrated, plunging the country into a relentless cycle of violence and chaos. What began as a power struggle has rapidly escalated into a full-scale humanitarian catastrophe, leaving a path of violent destruction across the country.

At the three-year anniversary, 33.7 million people (nearly two-thirds of the country) require humanitarian assistance – a 10% increase in need compared to last year. As of March 2026, more than 11.6 million people have been displaced, including more than 6.8 million internally-displaced, who still face the risk of violence.

Among the greatest needs in the country now is food and nutrition support. At the peak of the lean season between harvests in September 2025, 21.2 million people faced high levels of food security, including 375,000 people experiencing catastrophic levels of hunger, as categorised by the International Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). The IPC warns that the situation is expected to worsen in 2026.

Amid all of this, Sudan was hit especially hard by cuts to foreign assistance in 2025. That year’s Humanitarian Needs Response Plan (as set by the UN) was less than 40% funded, which significantly hindered the delivery of critical support to the most vulnerable people. The funding landscape remains uncertain in 2026. As of March, this year’s plan – with a reduced budget to prioritise the most urgent cases – is less than 16% funded.
