Concern's 40 years

Concern has come a long way since a small group of determined people responded to the crisis in Biafra in 1968. More than 40 years later, Concern Worldwide is a respected international charity. In 2008, a number of events took place to mark our 40th year.

Four decades

The Irish Times published a special supplement about Concern and its work called “Four Decades – Concern 1968 – 2008: Marking forty years of working to eradicate hunger”. 

Hunger in 2008 – the facts

  • 854 million people in the world do not have enough to eat
  • A child dies every five seconds because he or she is hungry
  • 10.9 million children under the age of five die in developing countries each year
  • Malnutrition and hunger-related diseases cause 60% of these deaths
  • Hunger and poverty claim 25,000 lives everyday
