Primary Schools

Here you will find information about the programmes and resources that we have specifically for primary schools to support you to deliver Global Citizenship Education.

Concern Primary Debates

Debating is a brilliant way to develop students skills in communication, researching, critical thinking and active listening. It is a great way to bring Global Citizenship Education into your classroom!

In partnership with Education Centres around the country, Concern runs an annual primary debating programme which gives students the chance to debate on topics such as poverty, climate change and inequality. Schools can enter a team of six students – with three students speaking and the other three acting as subs and researchers, but class participation is encouraged!

The programme is facilitated regionally by the Education Centres who have chosen to participate, with schools debating online. Once each region has declared a winner, the debates will move in person and are managed directly by the Concern Schools team.

We are delighted to have rolled out the debates to Northern Ireland as well, which means the programme is now all-island!

Hunger Heroes

Hunger Heroes is series of lesson plans, case studies and classroom activities that have been uniquely tailored for senior primary school students (3rd to 6th class pupils) around the theme of Hunger.

The activities have been designed so that multi-class teachers and teachers of junior primary students will also be able to find activities suitable for their class. There will be a cross-curricular approach in the pack with activity suggestions covering everything from literacy and numeracy to drama and art. Use our Teacher’s Packs to learn more about Hunger, Nutrition, and Development.

We encourage teachers to complete a Hunger Heroes action project or fundraiser with their class in order to deepen awareness and understanding and to become Hunger Heroes!

We have also developed new resources to be used alongside the book specifically tailored for senior primary school students. Each folder contains a PowerPoint presentation and an activity sheet.
